Gunplay at San Francisco

My grandfather, James A. Cowsill, Sr., was born in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1883.  A few years later, he and his family moved to Washington, DC.  Shortly after the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, he came to California to work as a bricklayer.

My cousin came across this newspaper article from 1909, featuring some fun he had during his bachelor days.

He married my grandmother in 1913 and reformed his wild ways.

  1. When I hear the stories of Great-grandpa Cowsill's mischief, I am immediately reminded of Grandpa's temperance and practicality. I can see by Grandpa's behavior and lifestyle that he sought to be unlike his father. Has he ever talked to you about this?

Anyway, I enjoy the anecdotes of Great-grandpa Cowsill. I suppose he possessed a lot of humor. He seems like someone straight out of a novel.

  2. My Dad got his sense of humour from his Father, but his seriousness from his Mother. His Mother trained to be a nurse, took him to church (Presbyterian/from German Reformed), tried to instill culture. His Father played golf, sometimes embarrassed his wife (wearing underwear to her teas), called my Dad "Jake", and died on New Year's Day on his way to place a bet. He was close to both of them.
